Al Ahly crowned Egyptian Super Cup champions after 2-0 win over Zamalek

Al Ahly defeated arch-rivals Zamalek 2-0 at Mohamed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Sunday to claim the Egyptian Super Cup, extending their record to 16 titles and a fifth consecutive triumph in the competition.

Al Ahly dominated the early stages, pressing high and creating several chances as Ahmed Sayed “Zizo”, Nejc Gradisar and Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” all went close.

Achraf Bencharki broke the deadlock a minute before halftime, slotting home at the far post after receiving a deft chip from Zizo inside the area.

Zamalek coach Ahmed Abdel Raouf made early substitutions after the restart in search of an equaliser, but Al Ahly’s defence held firm.

Al Ahly coach Jess Thorup replaced the injured Gradisar with Taher Mohamed Taher in the 56th minute to add energy to the attack, and the move paid off.

Taher set up Marwan Attia in the 72nd minute with a fine cross from the left, and the midfielder fired home from inside the box to seal the victory.

Thorup later introduced Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane and Ahmed Ramadan to close out the match, as Zamalek pushed forward in vain during the closing stages.

The win saw Al Ahly once again defeat their Cairo rivals to retain the Super Cup and widen the gap between the two clubs in the competition’s history, with Zamalek having won the trophy four times.
