Al Ahly Eye Fifth Victory over Al Merrikh SC

First Team, CAF Champions League, Football

Al Ahly start the CAF Champions League group stage journey on Tuesday night at 9:00 PM against Sudan’s Al Merrikh SC at Cairo International Stadium.

The Red Eagles have a rich history against the Sudanese side as we faced them on 6 occasions in African competitions, with the Red Eagles coming victorious in four matches.

First Meeting

Our first match against Al Merrikh SC dates back to 1983 when we met in the CAF Champions League round of 32.

Al Ahly won the first leg in Cairo 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Mahmoud El Khatib, Al Ahly’s current President.

The second leg in Sudan ended with a goalless draw, sending the Red Eagles to the next round.

Second Meeting – 10 Years Later

Al Ahly faced Al Merrikh SC in the quarter-finals of the 1993 African Cup Winners' Cup.

The Red Eagles achieved a 2-1 win in the first leg at home and won the tie after a 5-1 win in the second leg in Sudan.

The Eagles’ 5-1 victory in Sudan is the biggest result in the contest's history.

Last Meeting

We last met the Sudanese side in the 2002 CAF Champions League round of 16.

The first game in Cairo ended with a 2-0 win for the Red Eagles while the second leg witnessed Al Ahly’s only defeat to Al Merrikh SC, who won the match 3-1.

However, Khaled Bibo's goal was enough for the Eagles to reach the quarter-finals.

Tonight’s match is our 7th meeting against the Sudanese team and we hope for a strong start in the group stage.
