Inside Club World Cup: Four Facts Ahead of Al Ahly’s Sixth Participation in the Tournament

Al Ahly’s football first team is set to participate tomorrow in the FIFA Club World Cup after winning the 2019-2020 CAF Champions League title for the ninth time in the club’s history.

The Red Eagles will face Qatar’s Al-Duhail SC on Thursday in our first match in the tournament, which is held from 4-11 February in Qatar.

Here are some facts ahead of Al Ahly’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup:

1- Appearances:

Al Ahly holds the record as the most African team to participate in the tournament, with the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup being our sixth appearance in the competition.

Moreover, Al Ahly is the second most team to participate in the tournament coming after Auckland City.

2: First Club in Africa and the Middle East to Reach the Podium:

Al Ahly is the first African and Middle Eastern club to reach the podium, having won the bronze medal in 2006 after defeating Club America 2-1.

3-Number of Matches Played:

The Red Eagles played 12 games in the tournament, sharing second place with Real Madrid in the number of matches played.

The current African-title holders have the opportunity to surpass Real Madrid and hold the same record, of 15 matches, as Auckland City if we manage to beat Qatar’s Al-Duhail SC.

4-Previous Opponents:

In our 12 games in the tournament, Al Ahly didn’t face any European opposition. The Red Eagles faced three Mexican teams: C.F. Pachuca, Club America, C.F. Monterrey on four occasions.

While Al Ahly faced two Brazilian teams: Sport Club Corinthians Paulista and Sport Club Internacional.

Also, Al Ahly faced Australian teams on two occasions, playing against Adelaide United and Sydney FC.

Lastly: we played against the following teams once in the tournament:

Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao F.C (China),

Al Ittihad FC (Saudi Arabia),

Auckland City (New Zealand),

Sanfrecce Hiroshima (Japan).
