Al Ahly beaten by Pyramids FC in Egyptian League

Defending champions Al Ahly suffered a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC in the fifth round of the Egyptian Premier League at El Salam Stadium on Saturday.

The Red Eagles remained on five points from four matches, while Pyramids climbed to eight.

Moroccan midfielder Walid El-Karti put Pyramids ahead after five minutes, pouncing on a rebound from Karim Hafez’s blocked set-piece effort to slot home from close range.

Al Ahly controlled much of the first half but failed to make their dominance count, wasting several chances in front of goal.

Coach Jose Riveiro was forced into an early change, bringing on defender Mostafa El Aash after Achraf Dari sustained a muscle injury 10 minutes before the break.

The Spanish coach later introduced Nejc Gradišar, Taher Mohamed, Ahmed ‘Koka’ Nabil and Ahmed Reda in search of an equaliser, but his side could not find a breakthrough.

El-Karti sealed the win for Pyramids in the 68th minute with a header inside the area.

Al Ahly return to action on 14 September against Enppi in the sixth round, following the league’s pause for the international break.
