Al Ahly secure 1-0 win over Modern Sport FC in Egyptian Premier League
Al Ahly’s first football team secured a 1-0 victory over Modern Sport FC in the eighth round of the Egyptian Premier League at Cairo International Stadium on Thursday.
Modern Sport started the match at a high tempo, but Al Ahly’s solid defence thwarted their opponents’ efforts as both sides battled for control of the midfield.
The Red Eagles gradually took control of possession and created several chances, with their pressure paying off in the 17th minute when Omar El-Saai broke the deadlock with a superb header from inside the box following a perfectly weighted pass from Ahmed Sayed Zizo.
Al Ahly continued to threaten and created further opportunities to extend their lead.
However, Achraf Bencharki failed to capitalise on a promising chance after finding himself in a one-on-one situation near the edge of the box.
Head coach Hussein Ammouta subsequently introduced Hussein El Shahat and Ahmed ‘Koka’ Nabil, replacing Mounsef Bakrar and Ahmed Eid, respectively, in an effort to strengthen the attack.
El Shahat came close to doubling Al Ahly’s advantage after receiving the ball inside the penalty area and finding himself one-on-one with Modern Sport goalkeeper Mostafa Makhlouf, who made a crucial save to deny the substitute.
At the other end, Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced a superb penalty save, displaying composure and confidence to deny Modern Sport and preserve his clean sheet and his side’s lead.
Ammouta later brought on Soufiane Benjdida and Taher Mohamed to bolster the frontline and help Al Ahly extend their advantage.
Despite their missed opportunities, Al Ahly maintained their control of the match and held on to secure all three points ahead of the November international break.
The victory takes Al Ahly to 20 points, while Modern Sport remain on 13.
Al Ahly will next face Arab Contractors in the group stage of the Egyptian League Cup on Monday.
