Al Ahly arrive in Cairo after a successful Burundi trip

Al Ahly's senior football team returned to Cairo on Sunday after claiming a 1-0 away victory over Aigle Noir in the first leg of the CAF Champions League Round of 32, played in Bujumbura, Burundi.

The win marked Danish manager Jes Thorup’s first in charge of the Egyptian giants since his appointment.

“We had a strong first half, created several chances and scored, but I wasn’t pleased with the second-half performance,” Thorup told reporters after the match.

“We allowed them too much space and gave them opportunities to get back into the game.”

Thorup reiterated that there are no easy games in modern football, adding, “As I said in the pre-match press conference, we were facing a well-organised team with plenty of motivation.”

The coach described the fixture as only the “first half” of the two-legged tie, with the return match to be played in Cairo. “We’ll work closely with the staff and players to make sure we win at home and book our place in the group stage,” he said.

Thorup also thanked the Burundian authorities and fans for their warm hospitality.

“The welcome was exceptional, and the passionate crowd created a great atmosphere,” he added.

“This result gives us a strong platform to build on as we pursue our goals in the competition.”
