Al Ahly succeeded to clinch the bronze medal for the second time in the club’s history, after defeating Palmeiras of Brazil 3-2 on penalties.

Our captain Mohamed El Shenawy’s saves handed the Red Eagles the bronze medal after a heroic performance in the penalty shootouts.

The game started with frontline pressure from our players as we were keen to score the opener, but the Brazilian solid defense kept all our attempts away.

After five minutes from the start, Badr Benoun sent a long pass to Taher Mohamed Taher, but his efforts were blocked by Palmeiras’s goalkeeper.

Our clearest chance came in the 27th minute when Amr El Soulia passed the ball to Walter Bwalya, but the ball went away from the Congolese striker to keep the result as it is.

In the 40th minute, our goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy announced his presence as he finger-tipped a dangerous header to keep our nets clean.

The game was tightened in the midfield without any dangerous scoring chances until the referee blew his half time whistle.

The second half began with the Brazilian team on the front foot, as they kept the pressure to score the first goal, but our solid defense swept all the balls away.

Our head coach Pitso Mosimane used his bench in the 59th minute, as Mohamed Sherif and Junior Ajayi joined the game instead of Bwalya and Mohamed Magdy Afsha.

Eight minutes later, Ajayi announced his presence and notched the first goal of the game, but the referee disallowed it due to offside.

In the 75th minute, Mosimane made another two substitutions as Marwan Mohsen and Aliou Dieng joined the game instead of Akram Tawfik and Taher.

The minutes went on and the referee blew his final whistle, and the game went to penalties.

Our captain Mohamed El Shenawy made three penalty saves, while Benoun, Ajayi, and Mohamed Hany scored to secure a 3-2 victory.

The Red Eagles won the bronze medal for the second time in the club’s history.
