Al Ahly beat Arab Contractors to strengthen grip on League Cup group summit
Al Ahly’s senior football team secured a 1-0 victory over Arab Contractors in their Group C Matchday 2 clash of the Egyptian League Cup at Cairo International Stadium on Monday, strengthening their position at the top of the group.
The Red Eagles dominated proceedings from the outset, maintaining sustained pressure and enjoying the lion’s share of possession while creating numerous scoring opportunities.
Mohamed Hany and Taher Mohamed both came close to finding the net, but their efforts struck the post.
Achraf Bencharki scored the decisive goal with a well-placed header in stoppage time, connecting with a cross from Mohamed Hany to secure all three points and keep Al Ahly at the top of the group.
Al Ahly kicked off their Egyptian League Cup campaign with a resounding 5-0 victory over Asyut Petroleum last month.
They currently lead Group C with a perfect record of six points from two matches.
The competition was launched in the 2021-22 season following the establishment of the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association.
Held during international breaks, the tournament features clubs competing in the Egyptian Premier League.
Across its first five editions, Modern Sport claimed the inaugural title, Ceramica Cleopatra won the following three editions, while Masry lifted the trophy in the most recent edition.
The 2026–27 campaign marks the sixth edition of the competition, with 20 clubs taking part.
The teams have been divided into four groups of five, with the top two sides from each group advancing to the quarter-finals.
