Ahly secure away draw against Young Africans in CAF Champions League
Al Ahly secured a 1-1 draw away to Young Africans of Tanzania in the fourth round of the CAF Champions League group stage at Amaan Stadium on Saturday, maintaining their lead at the top of Group B.
Young Africans took the lead in first-half stoppage time through Hamad Ibrahim, who capitalized on a deflected ball to score from close range.
Al Ahly equalized in the 60th minute, with Alio Dieng finishing from close range after a fine assist from Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan.
The result kept the Cairo giants top of Group B with 8 points, three clear of second-placed Young Africans. Morocco’s FAR Rabat and Algeria’s JS Kabylie are both on 2 points.
Al Ahly started cautiously as the hosts squandered early chances. Allan Okello and Pacome Zouzoua both threatened, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier produced a series of fine saves.
At the other end, Trezeguet narrowly missed the target with an individual effort in the 17th minute.
Zouzoua went close again in the 25th minute, only to be denied by Shobier in a one-on-one situation.
Al Ahly increased the pressure after the break, and Dieng’s equalizer ensured the points were shared.
Coach Jess Thorup made tactical changes, introducing Achraf Bencharki and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane in place of Taher Mohamed and Aliou Dieng.
Young Africans pressed for a late winner, but Al Ahly’s defense held firm to secure the draw.
Al Ahly will next face JS Kabylie in the fifth round on Friday, 6 February.
